MARY ANN HURT

Mrs. Mary Ann Hurt, 89, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 1996, at Eldercare of Franklin County.

Born Dec. 13, 1906, she was a daughter of the late Robert Duncan & Mary Esther Savage Wescott of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her only sister, Ruth Wescott Downing, who lived in Somerset Bermuda.

Mrs. Hurt attended Central High School of Washington, D.C., now Cardozo High School. She was a graduate of George Washington University, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, a member of the Women's Club of Rocky Mount and the Patrick Henry Chapter of D.A.R. in Martinsville, Va. She joined the D.A.R. in Alexandria, and was later a regent of the William Winchester Chapter D.A.R. in Westminister, Md. She was a member of the auxiliary of Franklin Memorial Hospital and inaugurated a baby cap project for the hospital. The auxilians have made hundreds of caps for the babies born at Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was also a member of the Historical Society of Franklin County. She and her husband, Dr. Frank B. Hurt, resided in Westminster, Md. for 35 years, where he was a member of the faculty of Western Maryland College. Since 1965, she had resided in Ferrum, Va., where Dr. Hurt was a member of Ferrum College faculty for five years. In 1970, he retired and wrote ``The History of Ferrum College.'' Dr. Hurt died in 1992.

Mrs. Hurt is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 1996 at Lynch Funeral Home with Revs. James S. Angle and M.G. Goodpasture, and Professor Earl Grayson ``Bud '' Skeens officiating. Interment will follow in High Street Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services. Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge of arrangements.
