The Black Cultural Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has ended a long fund-raising dry spell.
The center announced Thursday that the state's prominent black newspaper publishers have pledged $100,000.
``I don't want you to think we're this big organization with deep pockets,'' said Ernie Pitt, publisher of The Winston-Salem Chronicle. ``We're going to have to work to raise this money.''
UNC-CH made the announcement Thursday night during a ceremony to officially welcome Gerald Horne, the BCC's new director, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported.
Raising the $7 million needed to move the center from its space in the student union to a free-standing building will be Horne's first priority. The center has raised about a quarter of that. by CNB
