NEW STATE RETIREMENT RECORDS SET IN 1995

Millions of dollars continued to flow into both the state and national economies each month from retirees and annuitants of the Virginia Retirement System during 1995. During calendar year 1995, the VRS retiree pool grow by some 5,000 to total 80,719 persons at year-end. For the first time in the 43-year history of the retirement system, retired state employees outnumbered teachers. Each month, retirees receive more than $71 million in retirement and survivor benefits from the VRS, up from $63 million a year ago. And of that $71 million, $65.9 million, or 91 percent, stays right here in Virginia where more than 73,500 of these former workers still make their home. (Staff)
