Electric Boat, the submarine-building subsidiary of Falls Church-based General Dynamics Corp., said Friday it plans to cut 3,200 jobs, more than 20 percent of its work force, at its plants in Connecticut and Rhode Island. The cuts include 2,200 layoffs. The rest will come from attrition and retirements. Workers will be released as Electric Boat finishes two subs for the Navy during 1996. The layoffs have been expected as Navy sub orders have slowed to a trickle. As recently as 1992, Electric Boat was building 13 subs. Now it has five and, by 1998, it will have one. Electric Boat has long competed with Newport News Shipbuilding for Navy sub construction contracts. (Staff and wire reports) by CNB
