DRIVER, 74, KILLED IN COLLISION

A 74-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision Friday morning on Route 10 near the Isle of Wight county line, state police said.

State police said Arthur Joyner of Suffolk was headed east in the westbound lane when his truck slammed into a van.

The accident occurred about 5:50 a.m. about one-half mile west of Route 600. Joyner died at the scene.

Joyner's truck hit a van carrying nine shipyard workers. Seven of the workers were treated and released at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, a spokesman for the hospital said.

Two others were admitted. They were Richard Goodman of Gatesville, N.C., and Cordie Boone of Gates, N.C. The hospital reported Goodman had multiple trauma injuries and Boon suffered a broken leg. Both were in staple condition late Friday.

A state police spokeswoman said seatbelts were worn by all involved.

Joyner was headed for the Oakland Christian Church in Chuckatuck to do what he did every day: check on the furnace, the building and to make sure everything was all right in the cemetery, a church spokeswoman said.

He was retired from Lone Star Industries. He was a lifelong, active member of Oakland Christian Church. He had served on the cemetery committee, the building and grounds committee, and was an usher and a deacon.
