SEEDLING TREES AVAILABLE AT LOW PRICES

THE VIRGINIA DARE SOIL & Water Conservation District is offering seedling trees at very low prices, if you order at once. It's to encourage everyone to plant more trees in 1996.

Seedlings are bare root and 1 to 2 years old. Conservation district officials warn that you must be prepared to keep them well-watered during the summer ahead. Available are dogwood, bald cypress, golden rain, sassafras, redbud, persimmon, loblolly pine and Virginia pine trees and the shrub lespedeza.

For order forms, call 427-4775. Orders must be received by Feb. 2. HOT POTATOES

In the January-February issue of Carolina Gardener, on newsstands now for $3.50, there is an article titled ``Technicolor Taters'' telling about the many varieties and colors of potatoes you can grow or buy today. The widest selection of these and other potatoes is available from Ronniger's Seed Potatoes, Star Route, Moyie Springs, Idaho 83845. Their catalog is free by writing to that address. KEEP OFF THE GRASS

With the recent cold weather, this old advice is always good. Don't walk on your grass when it's frozen. It may do permanent damage, and the least it will do is provide haunting footprints that will show up the rest of the winter. ``A WORLD OF ROSES''

McDonald Garden Centers published an excellent new rose booklet featuring the McCartney rose, which they say they'll have in early February. The booklet, called ``A World of Roses,'' is a rose selection guide, including evaluations by three local rosarians. The booklet costs $3 or is free with the purchase of any rose. THE REIGNING QUEEN

For 40 years, Silver Queen has maintained a winning position among white sweet corn varieties. Now, by writing a 50-word essay, one lucky Silver Queen grower will be judged the winner of a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. Other prizes include Silver Queen seed and T-shirts.

Look for entry forms in Silver Queen ads in garden magazines or send your essay about why ``Silver Queen Reigns Supreme'' to Silver Queen Essay Contest, Rogers Seed Co., P.O. Box 4188, Boise, Idaho 83711-4188. Deadline is March 15. FREE BULBS FOR CLASSROOMS

In recognition of the Netherlands as honored nation at the 1996 Azalea Festival, Norfolk Botanical Garden and Onderwater Garden Products of Chesapeake are offering free tulip bulbs to Hampton Roads teachers.

Call 441-5839 for a package of bulbs, growing instructions and classroom activity plans, focusing on the Netherlands and student participation. Requests must be made by March 1 and will be filled as long as supplies last. by CNB
