The School Board plans to adopt a new grading policy at its next meeting that spells out how student absences, cheating and misbehavior fit into academic evaluations.
The policy was formed by a committee of school administrators headed by Linda D. Palombo, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. The board reviewed it last week.
Language was added to an existing grading policy to address concerns about how discipline issues figured into a student's grades.
Some of the highlights:
Grades will be based on student achievement and the timely completion of work.
Students will be permitted to make up work because of excused or unexcused absences, including in-school or out-of-school suspension. But students will be responsible for requesting and completing all work missed in a ``timely manner.'' Work not made up will receive a zero.
Work that can't be made up at home, such as lab experiments or direct teaching, can be made up at the teacher's discretion through alternative assessment or during time provided before or after school or at lunch.
Students who intentionally skip school will not be allowed to make up work and will receive a zero for any graded work assigned on the day absent.
If a student is found guilty of cheating, a zero will be assigned for the work and the student will not be able to make up the work for credit.
Teachers will not be able to reduce a student's grades as punishment for inappropriate classroom behavior, including tardiness to class.
