SCHOOL BULLETIN BOARD

Repair jobs awarded

Here's a look at some of the action from last week's Thursday's School Board meeting: The board unanimously voted to pay Powell Management Associates Inc. of Norfolk $173,700 to install new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at nine schools and to replace the roofs at John F. Kennedy Middle and Florence Bowser Elementary this year.

The board previously hired the company to handle renovation work at Oakland Elementary, most of which will take place this summer.

The nine schools are Booker T. Washington, Driver, Bowser, Mount Zion, Robertson and Southwestern elementary schools and Forest Glen, Kennedy and John Yeates middle schools.

Resolution goes unsigned

The board, in response to points raised by Superintendent Joyce Trump, decided not to sign off on a resolution urging the state to adopt a school-funding formula change being pushed by the Virginia Education Association.

Signing the resolution could put the board in the position of supporting a specific ``funding prescription,'' Trump told the board.

She instead urged the board to give her the green light to send a letter to policymakers explaining the district's concerns about school funding and its willingness to cooperate in any deliberations.

The board took Trump's advice.

In the 1968-1970 biennium, the state earmarked about 51 percent of its general fund revenues for K-12 education. For the 1994-96 biennium, the portion will dip to an estimated 36 percent. In other matters...

The board's next public hearing on the 1996-97 operating budget is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 8 in City Council chambers.
