Katherine Kersey, a professor of early childhood education and chairperson of the department of child study special education at Old Dominion University, will be the guest speaker at the annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Holiday Inn-Waterfront, 8 Crawford Parkway.
Kersey, a faculty member at ODU since 1969, will focus her keynote address on the ever-changing roles of parents and professionals who work with children and families, and on ways children can be helped to become capable, responsible, self-motivated, productive human beings.
Kersey is the author of three books: ``The Art of Sensitive Parenting,'' ``Helping Your Child Handle Stress'' and ``Don't Take It Out On Your First Year Teacher.'' She also wrote ``Raising Children, and Parents, Too'' a weekly column that appeared in The Virginian-Pilot and other syndicated newspapers.
The Rev. James Mason from Emmanuel A.M.E. Church will give the benediction.
Tickets for the breakfast will be available at the door for $8.50. The buffet style breakfast will include scrambled eggs, french toast with maple syrup, bacon strips, grits, hashbrown potatoes and cinnamon apples.
