JOHN E. HAWKINS

John Edward Hawkins Sr., 84, of Route 1, died Friday, Jan. 19, 1996, in Albemarle Hosptial, Elizabeth City.

Mr. Hawkins was born in McYaheysville, Va. He was the son of the late Phillip A. Sr. and Mrs. Effie Lee Wright Hawkins and was a retired sheet metal worker and farmer. A member of Beulah Baptist Church, he was an Army veteran of World War II He was the husband of the late Thelma Hope Brinkley Hawkins.

Surviving are two sons, John E. Hawkins Jr. of Ahoskie and Nester C. Hawkins of Corapeake; sister, Ellen Grizzard of Suffolk; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Ron Parr. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gates County Rescue Squad, the Aulander Rescue Squad or to Beulah Baptist Church.
