MAN CHARGED IN STRANGULATION OF TWO WOMEN

Police have charged a New York City man with the strangulation murders of two women whose bodies were dumped at different locations in the city 10 days ago.

David Hughes, 24, is charged with two counts of murder and was being held without bond Saturday at the city jail. He faces an arraignment hearing Monday in General District Court.

Hughes was arrested without incident about 5:50 p.m. Friday by members of the homicide squad while he was standing near the intersection of Dallas Street and East Little Creek Road.

Police spokesman Larry Hill said Saturday that Hughes had been staying in the 8000 block of Simmons Drive while in Norfolk, but it was unclear how long or why he had been in the city.

The motive in the deaths of the women - Karan D. Miller, 29, and Angela D. Hawkins, 36 - remained unclear Saturday. Hill said police would not discuss that issue for now.

Although police would not specifically identify the women's occupations, ``they had similar occupations,'' Hill said Saturday. He acknowledged that they were known to be on the street often in areas frequented by prostitutes.

Both women were last seen alive late the night of Jan. 10 or early the next morning. Their bodies were found two hours apart in separate areas of the city, police said.

Hawkins' body was found about 5 a.m. Jan. 11 in the street in the 9200 block of Marlow Ave., near the Norfolk Naval Air Station.

Miller's body was found about two hours later in the parking lot of Lake Taylor Middle School by a student arriving for classes.

Hawkins and Miller frequented the Denby Park and Monticello Village neighborhoods, which are roughly between the spots where the bodies were found, Hill said.

Police do not know where the two women were killed, Hill said.

``Their bodies were dumped at the locations where they were found,'' Hill said. ``They were killed somewhere else.'' Both women were found fully clothed.

Hill said investigators don't believe anyone else was involved.
