PHELPS BACK IN OTTAWA AS BABY'S HEALTH GROWS WORSE

Defenseman Chris Phelps has left the Hampton Roads Admirals to return to Ottawa to be with his daughter, whose health has taken a turn for the worse.

``There's been a setback,'' Admirals president Blake Cullen said. ``He's on his way to Ottawa to be with his wife. After he arrives, we'll be waiting for an update. We're all very concerned for Chris and his family.''

Phelps' wife, Dawn, gave birth Dec. 21 to Calah Marie Phelps, a 7-pound, 10-ounce girl. Though she appeared healthy at first, it was determined she had a severe heart malformation that required surgery. She underwent surgery on Dec. 24 and has been in intensive care ever since.

Cullen declined to give details about the baby's condition.

Phelps was scheduled to play Tuesday in the ECHL All-Star Game in Tallahassee, Fla.

``He asked to be excused from the All-Star Game, which, of course, was understood,'' Cullen said. ``He did indicate he would try to get back for Wednesday's game (with Richmond at Scope) if circumstances allow it.''

The Admirals have nominated defenseman Bob Woods to replace Phelps on the All-Star team, though they have yet to hear any word on their nomination from the ECHL.

Trevor Halverson was also selected to the All-Star team, but the forward has since signed a 25-game contract with Las Vegas of the IHL and isn't expected to play. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
