Mae Pearl Collins Skenes, 90, of Pensacola, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 18, 1996, in a Pensacola hospital. She was a Christian of the Baptist faith and will be missed as a mother and homemaker.
She was born in Franklin County, N.C. on Aug. 1, 1905, and had resided in Chesapeake before moving to Pensacola 18 years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Donald Skenes in 1966; a son, Espree D. Skenes; her parents, William Norflet and Meta Card Collins; a brother, Thomas Collins and a sister, Irene Hedgepeth.
She is the beloved mother of Jasper D. Skenes of Pensacola and beloved grandmother of Donna Maria Skenes (David) Johnson of Portsmouth, Rhonda Skenes (Leif) Simmons of Norfolk, Robert Donald (Ramsay) Skenes of Virginia Beach; her great-grandchildren, Heather Sutton, Jena Simmons, Jonathan Johnson, Robert Skenes, Danielle Johnson, Logan Simmons, Matthew Johnson and Anne Skenes. She is also survived by her three brothers and sisters-in-law, William Norflet and Polly Collins Jr. of San Jose, Calif., Herman and Edna Collins of Kent, Wash., Furman and Lucy Collins of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Elizabeth Salters of Columbia, S.C. and a sister-in-law, Nellie Collins of Hendersonville, N.C. She also leaves behind many nieces, cousins and friends who loved her dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1996 in the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel with Rev. Matt Matthews, pastor of Simonsdale Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
