A Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corp. crane operator was left

stranded, but uninjured, 200 feet above ground after a fire erupted

in the crane's control cab, authorities said. The fire started at

about 11:45 a.m. near one of the crane's horizontal platforms in the

shipyard on Pier 5 just off Berkley Avenue. The operator, whose name

was not made available, had to stand on the metal arm in

near-freezing temperatures during the fire, said Jack Goldhorn, a

spokesman for the city Department of Fire and Paramedical Services.

Norshipco officials could not be reached for an estimate on damage.
