MICHAEL W. MILES

Michael Wade Miles, 50, of the 2200 block of Hampton Blvd., died Jan. 18, 1996, in his residence of a heart attack.

Mr. Miles, a writer, was a native of Portsmouth. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Portsmouth. Mr. Miles had previously written for New Republic magazine and had been an editorial writer for several newspapers. Mr. Miles was the author of two books, both of which had been published. He had also taught history at several colleges. Mr. Miles was a magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University, a member of Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity, and had received his master's degree from Stanford University.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Amelia Davis Miles of Portsmouth; a sister, Betty Wade Ward of Virginia Beach; three nephews, Matthew Ward of Newport News, Evan Ward and Burke Ward, both of New York City; a valued family friend, Stanley Barr. He was preceded in death by his father, Wade M. Miles and his sister, Amelia Miles.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in St. John's Episcopal Church, corner of London Boulevard and Washington Street, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Brian Hobden. The burial will be private. The family requests that all flowers be omitted and that memorials be made to Portsmouth Humane Society, 2704 Frederick Blvd., Portsmouth 23704. The family will receive friends at a reception in the Church Parish Hall immediately following the service. Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is in charge.
