A fugitive wanted in Florida since 1992 was arrested Wednesday in front of the Wachovia Bank after being stopped for a routine traffic violation, police said.
William L. Ferguson, 31, of Manteo, was pulled over by town police when an officer observed his car's expired North Carolina tags. Ferguson made no attempt to resist arrest, police said.
Ferguson was on parole for aggravated assault, a felony, in South Jacksonville, Fla., when he fled the state. An arrest warrant was issued by Duval County officials.
Police said Ferguson has lived in Manteo for one year. He is being held at Dare Detention Center while awaiting extradition to Florida.
