A Portsmouth man convicted on cocaine charges and awaiting trial for armed robbery has been indicted on federal firearms violations.
Jermaine D. Waters, 22, was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which recently assigned an agent to the federal Violent Crimes Task Force, a joint venture of FBI and Portsmouth police.
The task force is working to reduce violence in Portsmouth and remove career criminals from the state court system.
Waters, of the 2500 block of Elm Ave., was indicted on two counts of carrying a firearm as a convicted felon.
In February in Portsmouth Circuit Court, he was convicted of cocaine possession and sentenced to two years in prison.
He was on probation when he is suspected of carrying the firearms in June and August and committing robbery in August.
Waters has previously been charged 18 times in General District Court, including four times with drug violations, three times with failing to appear in court and four times with firearms violations.
Six of the 18 charges were dismissed.
