As a retired naval officer, I could not agree more with Capt. T. Hugh Winters (``Dalton off base,'' letter, Jan. 14). What we need in our Navy is a corps of officers who are willing to make decisions and are not reluctant to accept responsibility for those actions. Too often it seems we hear, ``It didn't happen on my watch.''
While I was not an aviator, I did have occasion to work rather closely with naval aviators who operated from the aircraft carriers. They are a fun-loving group who live their lives to the fullest and who risk their lives daily to provide safety for those at home.
What is happening to our naval-officer corps is disgusting. Too many are apparently willing to sacrifice their principles in order to stay in the promotion line of the politically correct.
I agree with Captain Winters: Let our fighting men do their job unimpeded by the politicians.
