WARRIORS USE ``BROWNOUT'' TO TAKE TITLE

The Great Neck Warriors certainly didn't suffer a power outage, but they did use a ``Brownout'' to win a youth basketball title recently at the Kempsville Recreation Center.

The boys, ages 10 to 12, defeated the Woodstock Tarheels, 17-9, to take the title in the two-day tournament.

Coached by Tyree Brown, the Warriors attack featured Justin and Trey Brown. Trey, 12, starts at point guard and Justin, 11, spells his brother and plays the other guard position the rest of the time.

``Trey's a good outside shooter. He and Kyle DuBois and Loren Sisson are our big three guys. They carry the scoring,'' said Tyree Brown. ``Bobby Isenberg is the fifth starter.''

``So far, Momma Brown hasn't had to referee between their sons over the point guard position,'' coach Brown said with a laugh.

The Warriors went unbeaten, 6-0, in winning the Kempsville tournament and won their first recreation league game.

The Brown family has an athletic pedigree. Tyree Brown's father, Edgar, served as chairman and president of the Great Neck Recreation Association.

``We had eight teams for the tournament,'' said Jimmy Butts, who works in the athletics department at the center. He and David Kirkland hosted the event.

``More than 100 kids played during the two days,'' Butts said.

The teams played a round-robin format to advance to a single-elimination round the next day that decided the championship.

TOURNAMENT, TOO: While the Great Neck Warriors were traveling to Kempsville to win their tournament, a team from Kempsville was storming through the Great Neck Recreation Center tournament.

Coach Phil Sawyer's team of 13- and 14-year-old boys swept through the Great Neck event, outscoring opponents 195-65. That amounts to an average spread of 65-22 for the three games played to determine the finalists.

In the championship game, Kempsville defeated the Plaza Panthers, 44-30.

Rashad Smith and Corente Dozier made the tournament all-star team in leading Kempsville to the title.

In the 15-17 boys, the Bronco Jaguars claimed the championship by beating the Razorbacks, 50-43.

A week earlier, the Great Neck Blue Devils won the 10-12 girls championship by going 3-0 in the 6-game format.

The Great Neck Monarchs captured the 13-14 girls title. by CNB
