INDOOR TRACK SEASON MAY BE LAST

Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .

The current indoor track season probably will be the last for Portsmouth schools.

Norcom, Wilson and Churchland move into the Eastern District with Norfolk schools in September. The five Norfolk schools do not have indoor track.

Norcom principal DeWayne Jeter is chairman of the new Eastern District alignment, and Jeter says indoor track will be terminated as a part of Portsmouth's sports programs.

``In most cases, indoor track has been run outdoors,'' pointed out Jeter. ``With the kind of cold weather we've been having, we're probably putting students at risk, and it's not wise to continue that.''

At present, Norfolk has swimming, girls field hockey and boys volleyball. Portsmouth schools do not participate in these sports. These will be continued in Norfolk. There has been discussion of boys volleyball in Portsmouth, but there is no plan to start it at this time.

Churchland has girls gymnastics and will be the only Eastern District school competing in that sport. The Truckers likely will compete against Southeastern and other area teams.

Wilson baseball and football coach Joe Ladisic suffered a ruptured colon and is now at Maryview Hospital.

After a recovery period, Ladisic is expected to undergo additional surgery to remove blockage.

A study conducted by the Hampton Roads Sports Authority, which Portsmouth's Mo Whitlow serves as chairman, shows it will take an estimated $140 million to build a 20,000-seat facility for major league professional basketball or hockey.

Now all they have to do is convince the leaders of the area cities and a good portion of the 1.5 million residents of Hampton Roads that it's a good investment.

Shall we be like the city of Nashville and start construction without the team? Or does a commitment come first?

The chicken or the egg?

Last Sunday, the headline atop this column read: ``Somebody fumbled the ball on bringing in CFL team.''

Caller Richard Slepin says a better headline would have been: ``Everybody fumbled the ball on bringing in CFL team.''

Right on!

The Crosstown Umpires Association is now organizing and seeking additional umps.

The association will work games in the Cavalier Manor, Charles Peete and Bennetts Creek Little Leagues.

For information about joining the association, call Gomez Parson at 485-5553.

The Portsmouth Sports Club is looking for old pictures of past Jamborees, club officers and luncheon programs to place in the program for this year's Jamboree.

Pictures can be given to club president Bill Kline or Jamboree chairman Jimmy Williams.

``We're trying to make everything a little extra special this year,'' said Williams, ``since this is the 50th Jamboree.''

A special area will be reserved at the Jamboree for past presidents and previous winners of the Herb Simpson Sports Person of the Year Award. by CNB
