Melville J. MacDonald Jr., 73, of 1700 Swannanoa Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 1996, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Norfolk, Mr. MacDonald was a retired Lt. Colonel of the United States Army, having received a Battlefield Commission while serving with the 100th Infantry division in France during World War II. Awards received during his 26 years of service include the Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, the Legion of Merit, and Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was employed subsequently by the Government Services Division of Western Electric Co. He was a member of Saint Francis Episcopal Church, and Retired Officers Association. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech University. Mr. MacDonald has been a resident of Greensboro since 1970.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth MacDonald of the home; son, J. Bruce MacDonald of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; brother, L. Carl MacDonald of Norfolk; and two granddaughters.
A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Forbis and Dick, North Elm Street Chapel. Entombment will be at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
