Mattie Smith Curtin, 81, a resident of Chesapeake and a former longtime resident of Cedar Island, N.C., died Jan. 28, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mrs. Curtin was a retired registered nurse with Portsmouth Naval Hospital where she was in charge of the nursery. She was born in Atlantic, N.C., the daughter of the late John Lupton Smith and Melinda Ann Smith, and was the widow of James D. Curtin. She was a member of St. Egberts Catholic Church in Morehead City, N.C., and was past president of Sea Level Extended Care Facility Auxiliary. She was a certified teacher and then graduated from Atlantic City General Hospital Nursing Program.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, James D. and Helen ``Pebble'' Curtin III of Chesapeake and John L. and Jennifer Curtin of Virginia Beach; a sister, Pearl Willis of Williston, N.C.; two brothers, William B. Smith and Charles C. Smith, both of Atlantic, N.C.; seven grandchildren, David, Merri Beth, Andrew, Susan, Michele, Darryl and Melissa; two great-grandchildren, James and Kenneth; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Cedar Island Methodist Church Building Fund, Cedar Island, N.C. 28520.
