Elizabeth Cherry Pateman, of Richmond, died Monday, Jan. 29, 1996.
Mrs. Pateman was the widow of the Rev. Herbert Thomas Pateman, and was born in Roxobel, N.C. Shortly thereafter her parents, Claudius A. Smith and Janie Cherry Smith, moved to Norfolk where she was reared and attended public schools. She married after being graduated from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, and left for California where, at that time, her husband was serving the Church in northern California. She was elected to the honorary Classical Fraternity, Eta Sigma Phi. She was formerly active in the American Association of University Women and a teacher in Ohio secondary schools. While in Ohio she also received honorary membership in the National Thespian Society. Her husband, who was Rector Emeritus of St. John's Church, Richmond, preceded her in death Nov. 13, 1990. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Norfolk.
Her remains will lie in state at St. John's Episcopal Church, Richmond from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday followed by a graveside service in the church cemetery 10 a.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
