The Great Bridge Wildcats failed to get their offense going Tuesday night, suffering a stunning 60-34 defeat at Churchland.
Defensively, the Wildcats failed to contain the charging Truckers. Offensively, Great Bridge bounced shots off the rim, then failed to grab the rebound.
In the end, Great Bridge coach Ro Moore substituted in her younger players, who scored 17 fourth-quarter points to match the starters' three-quarter total.
Churchland (14-0, 10-0 Southeastern District) took advantage of the Wildcats lethargic play, grabbing 55 rebounds, 33 defensive.
``They were just outhustling us up and down the court,'' Moore said. ``I thought we came to play, but I guess we didn't.''
Nicole Council and Shelly Singleton sparked Churchland. After building a 16-10 first-quarter lead, the Truckers went on a 32-7 run over two quarters to effectively end the game. Moore opened the fourth quarter with her younger players on the court and Churchland soon went to the bench as well.
Council posted 14 points with 13 rebounds, Singleton tallied 13 points and 17 rebounds and Stacey Hundley added 10 points for Churchland.
With the loss, Great Bridge missed a chance to move into a tie for second in the district, as Western Branch, currently in second, lost to Oscar Smith.
The Western Branch loss gives Churchland a three-game lead in the district title race with four matchups left in the regular season. A win over Oscar Smith Friday guarantees the Truckers at least a share of the title.
``We don't lack a little humility,'' Churchland coach Duke Conrad said. ``Tonight, we were sloppy. They pressed us a lot, that leads to high scoring and high numbers of turnovers. As long as we're scoring more than we're turning the ball over, we're okay.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
