When George Burns recently celebrated his 100th birthday, I tried to picture my own 100th birthday. I wondered whether if I lived that long, any of the Hampton Roads projects would be completed in my lifetime.
Would I see a Martin Luther King memorial built before the dream fades?
Would I stroll the broad concourses at MacArthur Center shopping mall and then want to stay in downtown Norfolk to visit other attractions?
Would I cheer as our Hampton Roads Admirals hoist the Stanley Cup in front of 20,000 fans at the Hampton Roads SuperScope Coliseum?
Could I wash my car and water my lawn in Virginia Beach without guilt as an endless supply of water flows from lake Gaston?
Would I cheer on a long shot at a horse track anywhere in Virginia or hear the roar of stock cars in Suffolk?
Or will I just be a 100-year-old man with a dirty car and a dried-out lawn with nowhere new to go?
