The Access to Medical Treatment Act has been passed in several states. This act protects the patient's right to choose the medical therapy desired and prevents a finding of medical misconduct against a physician based solely on the use of ``nonconventional'' medical treatment. Also included in this act would be the inclusion of physicians from alternative therapies on the board that decides professional misconduct.
A passing of this law in Virginia would increase access to alternative medical therapies. Many patients and physicians are experiencing obstacles to getting or providing therapies that are not ``traditional,'' and they spoke up at a meeting held by the Virginia Board of Health Professionals in Richmond in August.
The Virginia Board of Health is open to written comments or calls until March 15. Take the time to let the board know how you feel about this issue, especially if you value your freedom to choose the treatment you feel is best for you or your family.
