Johnie Lewis King Sr., 79, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 1996, at his home.
He was the son of the late John H. King and the late Gertrude Gatlin King of Kinston, N.C. Although a native of Kinston, the village of Avon on Hatteras Island was home to Mr. King for more than 60 years. He first came to Hatteras Island in 1936 with the Civil Conservation Corp. He later met and married the late Lina W. Meekins King. Mr. King was a World War II veteran, having served and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II, and later retired from civil service.
Mr. King is survived by two children, Johnie L. King Jr. and his wife, Wanda King, both of Avon, N.C., and Myrna K. Robke of Avon; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by a sister, Lula Cayton of Aurora, N.C., and two brothers, George Letchworth of Deluth, Minn., and Albert Letchworth of Williamsburg.
The funeral will be held at St. John's Methodist Church in Avon on Friday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Berry Taylor and the Rev. Don Brown. Burial will follow in the family cemetery in Avon. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. today. The family will receive friends at the church this evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Twiford's Island Chapel, Hatteras, is in charge of arrangements.
