GRANTS FOR TEACHERS

Tideland Electric Membership Corporation will award nearly $7,000 in Bright Ideas grants to teachers in Beaufort, Pamlico, Hyde, Dare and Washington counties at an awards luncheon Friday at Charlie Tom's Restaurant in Washington, N.C.

The grants, endorsed by North Carolina Gov. James B. Hunt Jr., officials of the Department of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Association of Educators, will underwrite innovative projects that will improve instruction for more than 2,100 students in eight schools.

The grant program, co-sponsored by Carolina Electric Cooperatives, is presenting its second round of grants.

Tideland EMC and 26 other cooperatives launched the grant program in 1994 to support educational initiatives the schools could not otherwise afford.

The funds go to teachers and principals in public and private schools serving grades K-12. Individual projects can be awarded grants up to $500 while team projects are eligible for grants of up to $2,000 each. by CNB
