Any great make-up artist will tell you that using good tools like sable brushes and sponges guarantees the best application. Local artist Mary Beth Nixon has taken make-up brushes and other elements found on the vanity table and transformed them into functional art worth admiring. Using sterling silver, fine silver, 14K and 18K gold, Nixon creates pieces with nature themes, such as twigs, rose thorns and ginkos.

An exhibition of her jewelry and vanity pieces can be seen at Zeitgeist Gallery, 132 Granby St., in Norfolk from February 8 through March 11. The opening reception is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today.
