LETTERS TO THE EDITOR-VIRGINIA BEACH BEACON

Don't cut down trees

I am a resident living on Shore Drive, and I am disgusted with the person's comment of favoring cutting down ugly trees on Shore Drive. I want every tree to stay! These trees are beautiful. After all, trees are almost extinct nowadays! I hear so many sirens night and day, but they don't bother me at all because I know the police are getting those idiots speeding.

Most people blame nature for how careless people drive. The trees are not causing people to run off the road.

I think the idea of a toll gate would solve the problem, along with lowering the speed limit. This would force people to slow down. The speed limit is 55, they drive 65. Maybe if 45, they would drive 55. Also another light or two. This road is dark and straight and perhaps stop lights would slow them down and streetlights would help make this road not so much fun to drive fast on after hitting the bars.

United Way a big success

As chairman for the 1995 Virginia Beach United Way Campaign, I would like to express my gratitude to the many volunteers, contributors and organizations that made our city's campaign a success. Working together, a total of $2,303,919 was raised through the Virginia Beach campaign, which was 101 percent of our city's goal. Together with the Combined Federal Campaign, the Combined Virginia Campaign and the other South Hampton Roads city United Way campaigns, a total of $15.4 million was raised during this 73rd annual community fund drive in our area. Many local agencies depend on United Way funding to continue providing services to people in need. Our community's continued support makes the United Way funding possible.

We've heard a lot in the news lately about the government shutdown and decreased federal funding to state and local programs. The people of Virginia Beach rose above this turmoil to show what it really means to be a community. As a community, we met and exceeded our 1995 United Way campaign goal!

Throughout the coming year, citizens in Virginia Beach can feel proud that their United Way contributions are providing critical services and comfort to people who need help most.

Thank you for supporting our community's United Way.

Don't ban soda vending

In regard to the Beacon article about soda machines in the Jan. 19 Beacon, I have lived on the Oceanfront for 16 years and this suggestion by a supposed Resort Area Advisory Commission is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of. Who are these people and do they even live near the oceanfront?

The soda machines I have seen are not ugly as most of them are modern in looks. I for one enjoy going for a walk or bike ride and stopping to buy a cold drink without having to be ripped off for a drink in many stores. . . 75 cents compared to $1.99. I would think this advisory commission would have better things to do like stopping the proliferation of time share salesmen from trying to sell me something, which I thought was illegal anyway. (They stop you in the middle of the sidewalk or street.)

Every city I have been to has vending machines as a service to the public, but our Advisory Commission wants to outlaw everything. Remember, every soda sold contributes tax money to the city. So, in essence, Advisory Commission, Get A Life and think of things to bring people here and not make anymore stupid suggestions to scare people away.

Thanks to rescue squad

May we try to express our deepest thanks to the South Plaza Trail Rescue Squads for their utmost care and kindness they so willingly gave to us when both my husband and I had to call them.

We have lived in many places but these people are tops in every way, believe us.

Thank you so dearly, each and every one of you.
