Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher arrived in Williamsburg on Thursday, beating the forecast winter storm and ensuring her appearance at Saturday's Charter Day at the College of William and Mary.
Thatcher, who holds the honorary title of chancellor at the college, is staying in a hotel in the historic area and will give a talk at a freshman seminar Friday.
She is scheduled to participate in Charter Day ceremonies with keynote speaker Pamela Churchill Harriman, U.S. ambassador to France.
Harriman is scheduled to travel to Williamsburg late today or early Saturday, following a scheduled appearance in Arlington.
``Frankly, she's the one we're worried about,'' said Peggy Shaw, acting director of public information at William and Mary.
``We're looking at different options to get her here, but with Thatcher here, the show will go on pretty much no matter what - unless the electricity goes out.'' Charter Day celebrates the granting of William and Mary's royal English charter in 1693. The 10 a.m. event, to be held in the 800-seat Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall, has been sold out for weeks and is not open to the public.
Harriman is scheduled to receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. Frank Batten, chairman of Landmark Communications Inc., will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters.
Harriman was a member of the college's Board of Visitors from 1986 to 1990; Batten sat on the board from 1990 to 1994. by CNB
