James Copeland Buchanan Sr., 64, formerly of Norfolk, died Feb. 1, 1996 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Born April 15, 1931 in Roxsboro, N.C., he was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army. Mr. Buchanan had worked for Sandler's Frozen Foods in the warehouse. He was a member of the Virginia Beach Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Mae Bray Buchanan and his wife, Ann Margaret Buchanan.
He is survived by six sons, Johnny Gordon Buchanan of Tallahassee, Fla., James Buchanan Jr. of Queen City, Texas, William Elbert Buchanan of Overton, Texas, Timothy Buchanan of Virginia, Rusty Buchanan of Virginia Beach and Mark Buchanan of Spring City, Tenn.; four daughters, Patricia Ann Burwell of Waxahachie, Texas, Barbara Sims of Cantonment, Fla., Bess Owens of White Oak, Texas and Brenda Buchanan of Cana, Va.; three step-children, Sharon Phillips of Williamsburg, Jerome Nist of Canton, Ohio, and Gary Nist of Miami, Fla.; five brothers, M.T. Carver and Wallace High of Chesapeake, Radford Buchanan of Clearwater, Fla., Jack H. Buchanan and William T. High of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Frances Buchanan of Canton, and Paul Perrott of Philadelphia, Pa.; stepfather, Everett E. Bray Jr. of Chesapeake and 25 grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to the local Children's Hospital Cancer Research. Mr. Buchanan's remains have been cremated. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge, Tenn.
