Helen Sanders Phelps, 76, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 1996, at home.
Mrs. Phelps was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., and was a Peninsula resident for the past 56 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church and The Swinging Singers. Mrs. Phelps was a member of Emera Chapter (NU)31 Order of the Eastern Star and was a charter member and past president of The Women of Newport News Scottish Rite.
Survivors include one son, Tom Phelps of Norfolk; one daughter, Rhetta Ann Wright of Churdan, Iowa; four brothers, Joe Sanders Jr., Ed Sanders and Bobby Sanders, all of Elizabeth City, and Jimmy Ray Sanders of Poplar Branch, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Eastern Star Rites will be conducted 2 p.m Sunday at Weymouth Funeral Home by Emera Chapter (NU)31 OES after which the family will receive friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church by Dr. James E. White, pastor. Interment will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.
