I am grateful to Portsmouth for the crime summit held Jan. 21. The enthusiasm created by giving the citizens of Portsmouth the opportunity to brainstorm and express individual concerns and solutions to the crime problems in their city will help to create a much better relationship between the Police Department, city officials and citizens.
The people who gave freely of their time and effort to organize and make the summit a success can be proud of what they did. The real heroes are the citizens who gave up their time for six hours on a Saturday afternoon to show that they care about the wonderful city in which they live.
More than 400 concerned citizens attended the summit. Even more impressive was the number of children and young adults who were present and eager to share their opinions.
I think everyone left with the feeling that it is time to put a stop to the crime that has taken over the city. The Police Department is doing the best job it can, but we as citizens need to make an extra effort and become more involved in recognizing and reporting crimes in our neighborhoods. Together we can make a difference.
