Reather Teaster Phelps, 78, of the 100 block of Maupin Ave., died Feb. 1, 1996, in her residence.
She was a native of Scotland Neck, N.C., and was the widow of Walter H. Phelps. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and Beasley Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jean Navarro of Chesapeake; four sons, James C. Phelps, Bobby Ray Phelps of Chesapeake, Jerry T. Phelps of Chesapeake, Stanley L. Phelps of Norfolk; stepdaughter, Jeanette Wharam of Portsmouth; and step son, Robert H. Phelps of Portsmouth; brother, Horace Outland of Murfreesboro, N.C.; 35 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Carlton Smith. Burial is in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church.
