A Florida fisherman, who lost two toes and had the bones of two others exposed, was rescued Friday by the Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer Ramage, which raced at maximum speed to get him help.
The Miami-based fishing vessel Captain Cato radioed for help off Port Canaveral, Fla., early Friday, saying one of its crew members, Joel Michael Shipley, of Merritt Island, Fla., had been injured.
Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Terence Anthony boarded the boat to conduct triage. He was assisted by Engineman 3rd Class Travis Ramey, the ship's boat engineer, and Torpedoman Seaman Troy Donahue, the ship's rescue swimmer.
After providing initial treatment, Anthony recommended an immediate evacuation.
Once the victim was taken aboard, the Ramage headed at full speed (nearly 40 mph) to Port Canaveral, 20 miles away.
On the Ramage, Shipley was treated by Chief Hospital Corpsman Harold Parker. He was transferred to a Coast Guard boat and then ashore to Port Canaveral Hospital. by CNB
