CORNELL OFFERS ADVICE ON DEER AND POTATOES

CORNELL UNIVERSITY publishes topnotch informational material, so if you have a deer problem, you may want its new video titled ``Suburban Deer Management.'' Cost is $20 for a 30-minute tape.

Two other new publications from Cornell are ``The Humble Potato: Underground Gold,'' which helps children explore a food crop from the perspective of science. Cornell says educators and parents also enjoy the 40-page publication. The other is ``The Great American Peanut,'' which illustrates life in 1851 and tells about how peanuts grow and how they came to the United States. It will interest anyone who wants to learn more about peanuts, the underground railroad and more.

Both publications are useful for clubs, after-school programs or educational projects with youth. The potato publication costs $7.50 and the peanut one $6. For any of the above, send a request with your check to Cornell University Resource Center, 7 BTP, Ithaca, N.Y. 14850. VOLUNTEER GARDENER NEEDED

A volunteer gardener is needed for the Lynnhaven House on Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach. If you have time and would like to plant and care for colonial vegetables and flowers, your skills are needed. Call Shirley Beuche at 456-0351. SOURCE FOR CHINESE LANTERNS

If you'd like some Chinese lanterns, pictured in this column a few weeks ago, here's your chance to get them free. Shirley Brendle of the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach will be glad to share. It will be March before they're up and growing enough that she can see where to dig. Call 340-5460. WHERE TO ORDER IT ALL

Looking for a jujube or pawpaw tree, a dwarf weeping hemlock or an everblooming allium - or simply the best window-box petunia and finest beefsteak tomato? Every three years, ``The Avant Gardener'' publishes a Source Guide that gives names and addresses of general and specialist mail-order nurseries. The 1996 guide costs $3 and covers 450 suppliers in 19 categories. The Mailorder Nurserymen put out a similar guide for $2, but it's not nearly as all-inclusive. For the Avant Gardener guide, send $3 to P.O. Box 489, New York, N.Y. 10028. LONGWOOD GARDENS SEMINARS

If you plan a trip to Longwood Gardens, this country's garden showplace near Wilmington, Del., you might want to participate in one of the many seminars they are offering at very low cost. For a bulletin that lists all the continuing education programs, write to Longwood Gardens, P.O. Box 501, Kennett Square, Pa. 19348-0501. Call (610) 388-1000, Ext. 516. CHANCE TO ASK QUESTIONS

If you'd like to visit with me about gardening or have a question, stop by the annual Hampton Roads Woman's Show next weekend at the Virginia Beach Pavilion. I'll be representing The Virginian-Pilot from 2 to 4 p.m. next Sunday and will have my gardening book to sell and sign.
