Citizens worry over crime and our ability to deal with criminals in the judicial system. Circuit Courts are overloaded. Yet, our judges spend precious staff time appointing members of administrative boards/commissions such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission.
Del. Leo Wardrup (with Sen. Ken Stolle) of Virginia Beach introduced House Bill 1178, which would transfer these appointment responsibilities to the governor. These two legislators, and others pledged to support this bill, are to be commended for moving one step toward judicial reform in Virginia.
Our overworked Circuit Courts should be free to devote themselves to crime, which is of prime importance to most of us citizens. Hopefully, passage of HB 1178 will be accompanied by actions in the Virginia Senate to remove our courts from political influence.
