BRAVO TO MEDNICK

Regarding the recent article about the late Lawrence Mednick, I would like to make a correction about dates and also add a few more words to the many accolades honoring this outstanding member of our community.

Mr. Mednick resigned from his post as second violinist and also soloist with the Feldman String Quartet in 1981. The quartet continued until 1984 with Mincko Yajima, New York, as second violinist. We both resigned at that time, and the quartet continued for three more seasons before the board of directors disbanded it.

Throughout the long and honorable history of the Feldman Chamber Music Society, a rich cultural experience was provided Norfolk and all outlying communities of Hampton Roads, as well as Virginia, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

I am the last original member of the quartet. Throughout the 30-plus years Larry Mednick served, we worked together in wholehearted co-operation and joy. It is rare to have a fine player be content in the role of second violin. The position is not secondary, however, demanding the utmost sensitivity and perfection from the player. He filled this role with great honesty and charm and a graciousness which was the embodiment of him as a person. It was like having a silk glove matching my playing. I could not have accomplished what I did as first violinist if it had not been for his unfailing support and friendship.

Bravo, Larry Mednick! A job exceedingly well-done.
