Virginia Beach public schools has introduced swimming as an interscholastic sport. Eastern District swimmers are looking forward to the opportunity to compete on the regional level for the first time. While high-school swimming competition has expanded, coverage of swimming by your newspaper has been reduced. Aside from report in the Compass and the weekly ``stats,'' there has been no coverage of Eastern District swimming this season.
While events in a sport long dominated by a single high school may not be considered ``newsworthy,'' a winning tradition is only as good as the ever-changing cast of young athletes who participate. The skill and dedication of Maury High School swimmers deserve both the collective and individual recognition so often given to other high-school athletes by your newspaper. As a parent and a teacher, I submit that the efforts of these outstanding young people are indeed ``newsworthy.'' Please renew and improve your coverage of high-school swimming in South Hampton Roads.
