The serenity of Riverfront Park will be sacrificed to create an inlet that will bring the Elizabeth River Ferry to High Street.
The fountain, installed in 1985 at a cost of $180,600, and the elaborate brick sidewalks gave the foot of High Street a really classy look. Despite the river traffic and the busy shipyard across the way, the perpetual motion of the water and the warmth of the bricks created an oasis downtown.
Before a contractor comes in to dig up the park and throw away the fountain, maybe the city should ask for volunteers to salvage the bricks and move the fountain to another location.
The proposed development in place of the park may be worth losing the quiet open space. But why not replace it by putting the fountain elsewhere? by CNB
