John G. Phillips
NORFOLK - John Gibson Phillips, 74, of the 1400 block of Monterey Ave., died Jan. 31, 1996, in the Southwestern Florida Heart Institute in Fort Myers, Fla. Mr. Phillips was born in Hampton, Va., the son of the late Roy Franklin Phillips and Mabel Starr Gibson Phillips.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Cullifer Phillips; a daughter, Constance Phillips Kellam, and her husband, Edwin, of Virginia Beach; two sons, John Gibson Phillips Jr. and his wife, Anne, of Norfolk, and Roy Franklin Phillips II and his wife, Anne, of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren, Richard, Clay, Sidney, Brooke, Michael, Jeffrey and Christine; a sister, Eleanor Phillips Cross; and a brother, Billy Baker Phillips, both of Virginia Beach.
Mr. Phillips was retired from the real estate and insurance business. During World War II, he was a Navy fighter pilot with squadron VF-21. He was a member of the Elks Club, the Norfolk Sertoma Club, the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. He was an avid fisherman throughout his lifetime.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd by the Rev. Ross Wright. The family will receive friends in the Church Memorial Hall following the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 1520 North Shore Road, Norfolk, 23505.
