The Protagoras, a 600-foot fertilizer-transport ship, ran aground
Saturday morning in the Chesapeake Bay off the Lynnhaven area of
Virginia Beach. The ship was not loaded with fertilizer, but was
carrying 16,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 148,000 gallons of fuel
oil. No spill was reported, said Lt. Laura Dickey of the U.S. Coast
Guard. The ship was refloated at about 9:30 p.m. At right is the
Lynnhaven Fishing Pier.
