In 1994, when I and a majority of the American people voted for ``real change'' and no more ``business as usual,'' we weren't expecting miracles but hoped that Congress would at the very least change the way it conducts business. Instead, we see that Newt Gingrich has disciplined two Republican freshmen for voting their consciences rather than following party lines.
These two Illinois representatives were doing what they were elected to do: represent their constituents first and the Republican Party second.
Newt was the person telling us how this new group of elected officials would bring about real change in Congress. He should realize that when the interests of the people and the integrity of the individual are compromised for the good of the party, Congress is still conducting ``business as usual.'' We definitely do not have any change.
