In 1995, the Virginia Beach fire marshal's office investigated the dumping of 1,966 gallons and 80 pounds of hazardous material. Taxpayers paid thousands of dollars to clean up and dispose of the materials.

On Thursday, Jan. 11, eight 55 gallon drums of chemicals were found on the shoulder of Barrs Road in the Burton Station section. The hazardous material team determined that the drums contained 400 gallons of solvents, waste paints, and hydrocarbon derivatives. Investigators believe the drums came from an automobile body and paint shop.
