ESTELLE J. UMPHLETT

Estelle Jones Umphlett, 73, of Manteo, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 1996, at the home of her son in Manns Harbor, N.C.

Mrs. Umphlett, a native of Deep Creek, Va., formerly lived in Elizabeth City for 36 years, and was a retired nurse at Albemarle Hospital. She was a member of the Berea Baptist Church and the Bethany Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Umphlett was the daughter of the late Josiah and Sophia Louise Jones and the widow of the late Dewey C. Umphlett. Mrs. Umphlett was also preceded in death by a son, William ``Shorty'' Umphlett.

Mrs. Umphlett is survived by four daughters, Janice Craig and husband, James, of Chesapeake, Ann Stallings and husband, Alton, of Windsor, N.C., Louise Brickhouse and husband, Sam, of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Carol Rolling and husband, Jim, of Atlanta; two sons, Dewey Erving Umphlett and wife, Sandra, of Morganton, N.C., and Wayne Umphlett and wife, Rhonda, of Manns Harbor, N.C.; three sisters, Mary J. Fleming of Chesapeake, Lois J. Satmaria of Maitland, Fla., Ilma J. Allen of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Luther N. Jones and Irving W. Jones, both of Elizabeth City, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Twiford Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, N.C., on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1996, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Jim Tosto. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of her brother, Irving W. Jones, 1600 Darian Dr., Elizabeth City, N.C., and in Manns Harbor at the home of Wayne Umphlett on Highway 64. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge of arrangements.
