SAMUEL E. BUXTON JR.

Samuel Edward Buxton Jr., 80, of the 100 block of Crawford Parkway, died Feb. 5, 1996.

Dr. Buxton, a native of Portsmouth, attended Portsmouth Public Schools, as well as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. He was a graduate of the School of Dentistry, Medical College of Virginia, class of 1937. He practiced general dentistry in Portsmouth until the beginning of World War II, then served in the United States Navy from 1940 until 1945, including participation in the Normandy invasion. He was retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of commander. After the war, he attended the School of Orthodontics, University of Michigan, and was graduated with a M.S. degree. He was the first orthodontist in Portsmouth, and practiced from 1947 until his retirement in 1987. He was one of the founders of the team approach to the treatment of cleft palate in the early 1950's. He was active in dental and orthodontic organizations, serving as president of the Virginia Tidewater Dental Assoc., and as the first president of the Virginia Orthodontic Assoc. He was a life member of the Virginia State Dental Assoc., the American Dental Assoc., Virginia State Orthodontic Society, and the American Assoc. of Orthodontists. He was a fellow of the Virginia State Dental Society. He was a life member of Monumental United Methodist Church, past president of the Walter Gum Class, and was a teacher there for many years. He was an Eagle Scout, and was an active supporter of Boy Scout programs. He was a member of the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club, the Torch Club, Portsmouth Historical Society, and other civic groups.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Pope Buxton; and their three sons, Brian R. Buxton of Tenafly, N.J., his wife, Galina, and their sons Michael and Robert, the Rev. Lawrence W. Buxton of Ashland, his wife, Beverly, and their sons Garrett and Tyler, the Rev. Craig A. Buxton of Norfolk. He is also survived by a niece, Ellen Buxton of Portsmouth; and a nephew, Bruce Buxton of Sterling, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Monumental United Methodist Church by the Rev. Raymond H. Edmonds. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Foster Funeral Home, High Street, Portsmouth, from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Monumental Church, or Portsmouth General Hospital.
