Eugene A. Schmidt, 94, formerly of Portsmouth, entered into rest Monday Feb. 5, 1996, at Maple Farms Nursing Center in Akron, after a long illness. He was the husband of Louise Sippel Schmidt, who died in 1993.
Born in Prescott, Ariz., he was a son of the late Eugene and Edna Allen Schmidt. He was a retired industrial engineer who worked at the U.S. Naval Yard in Norfolk. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Naval Reserve and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander. He was a member of the International Association of Torch Clubs in Portsmouth. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he did postgraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He is survived by a nephew, John A. Sippel Jr. of Lancaster, Pa.
