Jack Anthony Calandra, 84, of the 700 block of Matchpoint Circle, died in Virginia Beach General Hospital Feb. 6, 1996.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 29, 1911, and was the son of the late Joseph G. and Mary Margiotta Calandra. Mr. Calandra was the loving husband of 54 years to Sophia Elizabeth Podgorney Calandra. He was a retired jeweler for the Jonell Watch Company of Long Island, N.Y., after 30 years of service to the company. Jack was a veteran and served in World War II. He was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus, Holy name Society. In his younger years he was a semi-professional boxer and basketball player. He continued his athletic endeavours by coaching basketball. He was a unique person, one of a kind, a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert James Calandra and his wife, Ruby R. Calandra of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Tony Calandra of Savannah, Ga., and Joseph Calandra of Pompton Lakes, N.J.; a sister, Jenny Gallante of Palm Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren, Stephaine Kay Calandra, Michael Reeves Calandra, Brandon Michael and Nicole Marie.
A funeral Mass wil be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Father Tom Caroluzza officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans Section of Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall Chapel, and at other times at the residence on Matchpoint Circle, Virginia Beach. After the commital service at the cemetery the family will be gathering at the Aspen Racquet Club Recreation lounge. Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
