A Chesapeake man was charged Tuesday by federal agents with assaulting a federal officer and theft of government property.
Kurt Randal Spain, 35, allegedly cut power cable near Pier 3 at the Norfolk Naval Base and put the cable in his truck while the site was under surveillance by the Naval Base police, the FBI reported Wednesday.
When a naval police officer stopped the suspect and approached his truck, the suspect hit the officer with the truck, sideswiped a police car and ran into a tree. Officers arrested him and the FBI charged him with federal violations. The injured officer, whose name was not available, was hospitalized briefly.
